Principal’s Corner

Principal’s Corner | May 2017

Thanks to our community for your support of our teachers and teaching staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.  We are so fortunate to work in such a caring and supportive community.  One of our many celebrations during the month of April is the recognition our nurse, Jackie Petrie received from the SBISD School Board as she was honored with the “I Am SBISD” award.  Congratulations Mrs. Petrie!

We are excited to provide our students with an online mathematics supplemental program, DreamBox Learning.  This is a sophisticated online mathematics program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade students.   We will begin the program at school to determine a baseline of mathematical skills for each student.  The student is then able to extend their learning of mathematical concepts from the classroom in an engaging online environment.  A wonderful feature of this program is the fact that students are able to access this program from home.  Details regarding usernames and passwords for each student will be coming home soon from your child’s teacher.  This online program will be available for student use over the summer months as well.

All campuses in Texas must now ensure we have a minimum of 75,600 instructional minutes built into the school calendar.

  • The 2017-2018 calendar has two fewer instructional days.  Therefore, the minimum length of an elementary school day is 7 hours and 5 minutes (425 minutes).

In order for Valley Oaks to meet the minimum number of instructional minutes in each school day, we are required to extend each day by 5 minutes.  Therefore, our school times will be adjusted accordingly to meet these standards.  Our Campus Improvement Team has decided to add those 5 minutes to the end of each school day.  Below will be our new school times beginning next year in the 2017-2018 school year.
